The Vehicle
A 1971 FJ40 commission that saw us source a highly original canvas-top Land Cruiser for a client in Bristol. The earlier FJ40s ran the 3.8-litre F engine and three-speed gearbox, which we rebuilt and paired with a later-model carburettor, while retaining the original gearbox and transfer case.
The chassis was stripped, powder-coated and built from the ground up with new suspension; the original leaf springs were restored, and a new fuel tank, new brake lines, hoses and hardware were fitted throughout.
We kept an original look throughout — OEM lights and emblems, factory-spec grey vinyl on the interior, and as many of the original parts as we could save. New Toyota weatherstripping and a new custom-stitched canvas top complete the build. All in all, a beautiful earlier model restored and recommissioned in all its glory.
